About Vaughan

I help people move forward when the answer is not obvious

I am a Christchurch-based consultant, facilitator and trainer who works with organisations facing complex or poorly defined change. I am usually at my best where the challenge crosses boundaries, different teams hold different pieces of the answer, or a strategic idea needs to be translated into something people can genuinely deliver.

Background and evolution

Grounded in Business Analysis, working beyond its boundaries

My career has been grounded in Business Analysis since 2011, but the work I have increasingly been asked to do sits beyond a traditional BA role. It may involve shaping a programme before the project exists, reframing work that has stalled, connecting strategy to delivery, designing a process and operating model, translating between a business and its technology partners, or helping people make sense of an emerging capability such as AI.

That evolution is the reason for the Luckman and Beyond BA positioning. Business Analysis remains an important foundation because it provides a disciplined way to understand needs, context and change. Beyond BA recognises that solving the wider problem often requires moving across the boundaries between analysis, strategy, architecture, facilitation, process, technology and delivery.

How I work

Clear thinking without unnecessary theatre

I ask questions, challenge assumptions and make uncertainty visible, but I do that in service of helping people move. I care about creating documentation that is useful, workshops that result in decisions and recommendations that account for the organisation that must actually implement them — and I stay involved to help implement them.

I am independent enough to step back from the momentum of an existing solution, but practical enough to work alongside the people who need to turn the answer into reality. I do not just advise and leave; I get my hands dirty and help deliver. I am also comfortable identifying where a specialist technical partner or a different type of support is the right next step.

Curiosity

Questions that test the stated problem.

Clarity

Complex conversations turned into usable decisions.

Pragmatism

What works in the real organisation.

Delivery

Staying hands-on so the change actually happens.

Community and capability

Grounded in the New Zealand BA community

I am closely involved in the New Zealand Business Analysis community through Analysis Collective Aotearoa, local events, speaking and the Next-Level BA programme. That involvement is important to me because it creates a space to test ideas, learn from how other people approach difficult work and contribute to the capability of the wider profession.

I also write regularly on LinkedIn about transformation, AI adoption and the evolving Business Analysis role — the easiest way to follow my current thinking or start a conversation.

Rates and availability

Clear pricing, so the money conversation is easy

I work mostly on complex, strategic and poorly defined problems — the kind where a small number of people can genuinely add value. My rates reflect that focus, and they are deliberately transparent so we can both tell early whether the fit is right.

If the pricing feels too high for what you need, that is usually a useful signal in itself: it probably means the work is more straightforward than it first appears, and someone else may be a better and more cost-effective fit. I would always rather have that conversation upfront than partway through.

$220 / hour + GST
Longer-term engagements

Ongoing consulting and advisory work, including hands-on delivery alongside your team.

$2,000 / day + GST
Short-term engagements & workshops

Focused pieces of work, facilitated sessions, and Next-Level BA training days.

Availability varies through the year, so it is worth getting in touch early if you have timing in mind. I will always be straight with you about when I could realistically start — and if I am not the right person or not available, I am happy to point you towards someone who is.

Start a conversation

Bring the challenge, even if it is still difficult to explain

A first conversation can be useful before the scope is clear. Tell me what you are trying to achieve, what currently feels stuck or uncertain and what has already been tried. Feel free to email or just pick up the phone — we can work out whether I can help and what a sensible next step would look like.
